Many leaders dream of becoming coaches to help their teams grow. But after some training and practice, they realize coaching might not be their thing. Why?
First, coaching is all about communication. Do you struggle to explain things clearly? Are you actively listening, or does your body language show you’re bored? If you’re unsure, you might need to polish those communication skills.
Another issue is the mindset. Some coaches approach it like mentoring, offering advice instead of letting the coachee figure things out. If that’s you, try stepping back and allowing the coachee to lead the conversation.
Specialty coaching, like Business or Leadership, requires expertise. It’s tough to have authentic conversations if you don’t have enough knowledge in your field.
Coaching is also evolving, so staying open to new ideas and continuous learning is key.
Lastly, good intentions don’t always equal good results. Some people struggle with personality fit. As a coach, my job is to offer honest, kind feedback to help them grow.
Coaching goes beyond skills and scripts—it’s about having the right mindset and growing alongside your coachee. Stay curious and keep improving, because coaching is as much about who you are as what you do.
